vpn bos client

Matthias 3 months ago in bOS Client updated by Matthias Funk 2 months ago 7

Hello, has anybody experience with access to the bos client from outside my local wifi with a VPN on my mobile device. Somehow the bos client is not booting up when i am outside my wifi. Even though it works perfectly with other apps like home assistant.

Matt

Would be awesome if bOS also supported Zerotier VPN as its free for home users and quite easy to use. I know that HA supports it and it worked well with it. I've also tested Wireguard but that was done with Mikrotik routers in my tests - also had no problems with it.

I'm regularly connecting using Wireguard with no issue. Is your server connected on the same network ? Are you trying to connect your client with the internal network IP ?

Yes, i think the server is connected. I am not sure, about the internal network IP. But shouldn't it work automatically. I mean, the IP adresses should be of my internal network, when i am tunneling into it with the VPN. And it works with home assistant. What i find interesting is, that i can use comfort click from outside my private network, when the comfort click app is still opened and when i opened it, when i was in my private network

Hello,

If it works with other devices, it has to work with ComfortClick...

If you're using VPN, I assume that you're not using Access ID, so basically your profile is manually configured, with the local IP address, username and password.

Can you check if using the local IP address, both on "Local Address" and "Public Address" works?

If you leave Public Address empty, and you're using for example Cellular Data to connect to the bOS via VPN, I think that the app never tries to use the local IP, but I might be wrong.

So in case, edit your profile on the app, and place the local IP on both fields and tell us if it works via VPN.

Best regards

Im having same issue. If i want to connect to my jigsaw using VPN and cellular data it doesnt work, however it does work if i have VPN turned on and am connected on any Wifi network (outside of home). It does feel like an artificial limitation by bOS Client app that checks if device is connected to Wifi. Configuration in bOS Client is set with ip address of Jigsaw on my home network. I am using it on iOS.

Hello,

As I've posted previously, if you're using VPN for exclusive access to your bOS device, my advise is that you have to place the LAN IP address on both fields, both local address and public address. Otherwise bOS won't connect if you're on mobile data. Tested and confirmed.

If you leave Public address empty, and you're connected via mobile data, bOS will never connect to the device.

Nonetheless, and based on Bor Buh post, the possible explanation on if your phone is connected to an external wifi the VPN connection it works even with the Public address empty, is, and it's only my theory, that when you're connected to a LAN, bOS will try to find the Local address of bOS, and as your phone is connected to a Local network rather than a public mobile data network, it won't find bOS on the LAN itself, but as you're also connected to a VPN the Local address will be found and connected. But this is just a theory.

So, my advise again is: if you're using VPN to exclusive access to your bOS, place your bOS LAN address on both Local address and Public address. This way, if you're connected at home it will work via LAN, and if you're connected via mobile data + VPN, it will try the Public address, which in this case ia a LAN address over VPN.

Best regards

Hey guys,

i was writing with the comfort click customer service back and forth.

They changed something in the app in September. I downloaded the newest version and now it works perfectly for me.

So when I am outside my wifi, I switch on the vpn and I can log into my comfort click bos client.

It also works with the "automatic" settings in the vpn client (wireguard),

Many thanks to the comofort click customer service!! Good work.

Thanks,

Matt
